Death Investigation Seminar
Purpose:
Students of this course will experience and observe a variety of methods used to determine the type of death scene, identify modes and manners of death, discuss how to conduct effective crime scene evaluations, and recognize techniques for evidence identification and collection.
The techniques utilized in this training will coach students in the use of sound and proven investigative protocols as well as prepare them for understanding specialized techniques. This course is designed to enhance the skill levels of first responders, seasoned investigators, and investigative supervisors.
General Course Objectives:
- Recognize appropriate duties of the first responders, investigators, and administrative personnel
- Discuss crime scene identification and security
- Discuss the recognition, identification, documentation, and collection of evidence
- Discuss and identify legal issues and concerns
- Discuss investigative procedures and strategies at the death scene
- Analyze wound dynamics and mechanisms of injury
- Understand the artifacts related to modes and manners of death
- Discuss the dynamics related to the five manners of death
- Examine investigative strategies related to:
- Sexual homicide
- Child/infant deaths
- Serial, spree, and mass killers
- Officer-involved critical incidents
- Understand the significance for developing a victimology
- Discuss the importance and determination of a time of death
- Discuss methods for establishing the identity of the deceased and family notification
- Understanding the autopsy
- Discuss the evaluation and reconstruction of the death scene
- Discuss complex death scene investigations
- Demonstrate bloodstain pattern recognition at the death scene
- Demonstrate practical understanding of death scenes through case study examination
- Demonstrate proper Interview and interrogation techniques and strategies
- Discuss the role of the prosecutor
- Analyze how to motion proof a murder case
